About Our Small Animals

Pets in this department are becoming more and more popular with people of all ages. Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, and other small animals require as easily manageable amount of care and space. They can be very affectionate and are well suited to apartment living. Due to their relative affordability, many species of small animals make a great first pet for a child. Our small animal staff would be glad to answer any questions you may have about your pet.

Types of Small Animals

Over 40 breeds of rabbits exist. They have excellent peripheral vision because their eyes are spread so far apart on their heads. There are hundreds of different colors. Like people, different rabbits have different personalities and some are more sociable than others. Most are warm and affable and tremendously amusing to watch.

Adult Size: Varies by breed from 2-20 pounds
Life Span: 5-10 years

Very social animals guinea pigs prefer to love in same sexed pairs. When handled regularly early in life guinea pigs become very tame and enjoy human contact. Mellow and friendly they rarely bite or scratch.

Adult Size:
2-4 pounds
Life Span: 3-6 years
Many hamsters are solitary animals that must be kept singly in order to avoid fighting that can result on the death of one of the weaker ones.

Adult Size: 1-3 inches
Life Span: 1-3 years

Smart, sociable, and curious ferrets make entertaining, affectionate pets if their owner takes the time to bond with them. They love to spend their waking hours playing and socializing with their owner and each other. They are usually happiest with one or two companions.

Adult Size: 13-15 inches long, plus 3-4 inches for the tail
Life Span: 6-10 years

Clean and virtually odorless the gerbil is a terrific jumper. Their powerful hind legs can propel them out of any open enclosure. Once gone, they may be hard to find. So, is best to keep in an enclosure with a secure top.

Adult Size: 3-6 inches, plus 3-8 inches for the tail
Life Span: 3-4 years

A shy animal the Chinchilla may take a while to be at ease with its human friends. However, once trust has been established they are relatively easy to train and can even be taught to use a littler box.

Adult Size: 12 inches, 15 pounds
Life Span: Up to 20 years

Intelligent, inquisitive, and resourceful rats are easily tamed and make good pets with proper care and companionship. They enjoy the company of humans and can often be taught simple tricks.

Adult Size: 13-18 inches including tail
Life Span: 2-3 years

Mice are active, social, and somewhat timid animals that are becoming more popular as pets. Not only are they fun to watch but they are also easy to keep. Hardy and very resourceful creatures.

Adult Size: 2-4 inches
Life Span: 1-3 years

There are many species of Hermit Crabs originating mostly from seashore locations. Hermit Crabs don’t have shells of their own and in order to protect their bodies they “borrow” shells discarded by other creatures. When they outgrow these quarters they look for a new shell.

Adult Size: Varies
Life Span: 1-8 years
